Overheard on the News

On the local news this morning:
"The new law would make it a crime to be in the United States illegally."
All I could do was look at the television and do a John Stewart blink.

Because ... you know ... as it stands .... it's not a crime to be in the United States ... illegally.

Riiiiiiiight.

This may not be as dumb as it sounds. I read another column somewhere where the columnist was surprised to learn from some government official or legal expert that being in the US illegally in and of itself is a *civil* code violation and thus, technically, not a crime. (I don't know if this is true, this is just what I read.) If they are now adding laws to the *criminal* code, then being here illegally would, technically, be a crime. Which is a good thing, in my view, closing the loopholes and all that.

Interesting. "Against 'the code'" isn't necessarily a crime.

Odd.

What's worse is that this law is actually controversial. Enforcing the law is now "racist." Why something so blindingly obvious had to be codified in the first place, is beyond me.

Outside Arizona. Among people who have no say in the laws Arizona passes. Who refuse to get behind a uniform federal law of the same kind, or insist that the federal government do its job of protecting the borders.

It could lead to "profiling." We're not supposed to notice the brown skin of the gate-crashers, just like we're not supposed to notice the hair color, eye color, skin color, first names, religion, or age of the guys trying to blow up airliners. It could lead to "civil rights violations." Of people who are by definition, trespassing. Who by definition have no legal civil rights. Who are criminals.

It boggles the mind. You just know some idiot judge is going to accept the case, overturn the law, and the thing will go all the way to the Surpremes.

The latest word is that San Francisco is considering boycotting Arizona over the matter. Boo hoo hoo.
